The meeting highlighted the growing importance of alternative solutions in response to water scarcity and climate change, emphasizing the need for an integrated approach to water use

On July 11, various entities with common interests in the sustainable management of water resources gathered in Évora. The meeting highlighted the growing importance of alternative solutions in response to water scarcity and climate change, emphasizing the need for an integrated approach to water use.

During the session, the value of non-conventional water resources was acknowledged, particularly the reuse of treated wastewater, also known as Water for Reuse (WfR), and seawater desalination. These solutions were identified as strategic for strengthening the resilience of supply systems, reducing pressure on natural water resources, and ensuring long-term sustainability.

The initiative also advocated for investment in innovative technological approaches and the strengthening of environmental education as key pillars for achieving efficient water management. The need to frame these actions within the so-called water-energy-food-ecosystems nexus was also emphasized, promoting an integrated and interconnected view of natural systems and human activities.

Participants expressed their intention to continue working in a network, sharing knowledge and best practices, and encouraging public policies that support the adoption of sustainable and adaptive measures.
