Fast-Track School #1 in Palermo

17/01/2024

The first Fast-Track School of Sol2H2O took place on January 10-11 at UNIPA (University of Palermo Campus), Sicily.

In parallel with the #3 Sol2H2O project meeting, the #1 Fast-Track School (State of the art (solar-driven water production & water treatment technologies and brine treatment processes, beyond SoA possibilities) took place in Palermo, Sicily, on the 10th and 11th of January. Hosted by UNIPA, and with speakers from all the consortium partners, had 38 attendees (both online and onsite), including young and senior researchers.

Besides the presentations, the onsite attendees had a technical visit to UNIPA Brine Valorisation Lab and on the second day, the Fast-Track School had different group debates and ended with a researcher’s brainstorming session for onsite attendees.

The group debates focused on:

  1. Reclaimed wastewater as a new source of water
  2. Thermal desalination for brine concentration
  3. Photovoltaic Reverse Osmosis: Integration of PV energy in large scale desalination plants, challenges to face
  4. Brine valorization strategies: Processes to recover minerals from brines, estimate of potential and implementation barriers.
