The National Water-Energy Strategy Symposium, a 2-day event organized by UNIPA in collaboration with the newly constituted Italian Association for Desalination and Water Reuse (AIDARA) under the Sol2H2O project, took place at the University of Palermo on the 1st and 2nd of July 2025. The Symposium covered Seawater Desalination and Related Technologies in the context of the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem (WEFE) Nexus – with invited speakers from Policy, Industry and Civil Society actors.
The sustainability of water supply has become increasingly critical in several regions of Italy. In this context, the use of unconventional sources—such as sustainable seawater desalination—can play a key role in mitigating water scarcity. It also supports an integrated and circular approach to water resource management, enhancing the resilience of supply systems.
The Symposium presented and critically examined the state-of-the-art in desalination processes and technologies, their potential applications at both regional and national levels, current implementations, and future prospects. Related technologies and possible integrations within the framework of the circular economy were also explored, along with environmental, social, and economic sustainability considerations in the context of the WEFE Nexus.
The Symposium offered a valuable opportunity for all stakeholders to engage in dialogue. It brought together experts from scientific and technological research, industry, institutions, and professionals in the sector to exchange ideas and promote collaboration.
